Baker Furniture is one of America’s longest-established furniture manufacturers, founded in 1890 in Allegan, Michigan by Siebe Baker, a Dutch immigrant who began as a maker of interior woodwork and doors. The company produced its first piece of furniture three years later, and under the leadership of Siebe’s son Hollis Baker, who joined the company in 1910, Baker grew into a nationally recognized maker of fine case goods, seating, and tables. The company’s Grand Rapids, Michigan location placed it at the center of American furniture manufacturing during its most productive decades.
Baker built its reputation on quality construction and a willingness to work across design movements. The company produced reproductions of historic European furniture, Mid-Century Modern pieces, and licensed collections from international designers. The Milling Road label, introduced in the late 1950s, offered a simpler, more accessible line of furniture while maintaining Baker’s construction standards. Collectors today recognize Milling Road pieces by their labels and by the consistent quality of joinery and finish that defines the Baker brand.
Materials and craftsmanship set Baker apart in the secondary market. Case goods typically feature dovetailed drawer construction, solid brass hardware, and hand-applied finishes. Baker worked with a range of materials including mahogany, walnut, lacquered surfaces, silver leaf, and natural fibers like raffia and cane. The variety of finishes and materials means that Baker pieces span traditional, transitional, and even Chinoiserie aesthetics, giving collectors a wide field to explore within a single maker’s output.
For vintage buyers, evaluating Baker furniture requires attention to condition and attribution. Original finishes are generally preferred, as they reflect the intended color and sheen of the piece. Drawer runners should operate smoothly, joints should be tight, and veneer should be checked for lifting or bubbling. Labels and stamps help confirm authenticity — Baker pieces typically carry a maker’s mark, and Milling Road pieces carry their own distinct labeling. As with all vintage furniture, buyers should be aware of qualified attributions such as “After Baker” or “In the Style of Baker,” which indicate that a piece is not a confirmed Baker production and should be evaluated on its own merits.
Baker furniture has strong collectible appeal because the company’s long production history means pieces are available across a range of price points. Mid-Century pieces by Baker offer the construction quality of a heritage manufacturer at prices that can be more accessible than pieces from dedicated Mid-Century makers. The Milling Road line in particular has attracted interest from designers who appreciate its clean lines and solid construction. Mirrors, lighting, and smaller accessories by Baker also circulate in the secondary market and can complement larger case goods.
At Show Pony Palm Beach, we curate confirmed Baker Furniture pieces that have been inspected for construction quality, condition, and authentic labeling.
